Little Tybee Island trip

For the long Memorial Day weekend, I went kayaking with some friends (Heather, Sarah Sydnor, Ryan Camp, and Kathy Stair) to Little Tybee, where we camped for a coupla nights. The weather was sweltering, but beautiful. I packed all of my gear and more than my share of the group gear in and on a LiquidLogic Pop. For those who don’t know, that is a small whitewater playboat. I had a dry bag strapped to the back deck, and my sleeping pad and tent poles strapped to the front. It made me pretty happy. Not a lot of note from our time on the island.

There was only one daytime high tide during our time there, but I savored that one. It was Saturday, around 6pm. I surfed for around an hour - until fatigue started making my rolls sloppy - and it was excellent. I so wish I had more opportunities to surf kayak.

Carrying the boat back up the beach from surfing, I hurt my back. Instead of setting it down like a normal person. I decided - in an adrenalin fog - to throw the kayak the last few feet. I swung it from my hip and pushed up with said hip and - stab! Something in my lower back didn’t like that at all. Luckily, Sarah is training to be a physical therapist, so she took care of me. I still couldn’t walk upright the rest of that day.

We spent Sunday afternoon in Savannah on River Street. Bought fudge, ate at my favorite pub, watched kiteboarding videos in the kite shop - all of my Savannah usuals.

After the sun set, we went back to the car and started driving without a destination, but before we went two blocks we found one. In one of Savannah’s many squares, there was a live band playing. We stopped to check it out. The band, a bunch of old black guys, were playing, and playing well, [ask someone what they played and insert here]. I was delighted to find a gelato shop on the square was open and enjoyed a proper lemon and strawberry (limon e fragola) gelato. We hung out and listened to the band for hours. Everyone but me went to the front and danced. At one point they inspired a 50-person electric slide. My hurt back and I sat and people-watched. It was a very pleasant end to a great weekend.

It sounds like you’ve spent a great weekend. For me, there is no better way to spend the vacation than Sea Kayaking. It’s amazing how you can break off all the troubles and worries while paddling your way through the water.
