Andy Budd: An Objective Look at Table Based vs. CSS Based Design
Published June 11th, 2004 in Web DesignSome thoughts on Andy Budd’s thorough article:
First, thanks Andy for the discussion piece. I think this is a subject that deserves more attention. Many are quick to cry witch at the sight of tables, though the quiet masses still seem to be (rather successfully) designing with them.
My first thought was man this is good - why didn’t I write it?. Andy doesn’t say anything new or revolutionary, but he tells the unpopular truth about table based design. In fact, it reminded me of Zeldman’s DWWS. Its treatment of table layouts is much closer to Andy’s article than to the zealotry more commonly heard today. The article showed a thoughtful, broad perspective that is often lost after years in front of a monitor. It summarizes some of the feelings I have, but didn’t fully recognize until I read them in someone else’s words. I agree with the article on almost every point.
One disagreement - in my experience, css’ front-heaviness is more than offset by:
- lightweight html
- fewer server requests (no spacers, less slicing of images necessary)
- and less redundancy
Keep up the good work Andy.
