Sorry to take things so literally, Seth
Published July 5th, 2004 in MiscellanySo, this is probably egocentric, but I’m afraid I’ve offended Seth Godin. In his recent post Better living through hyperbole, Seth complains a bit about responses he had to his not-quite-as-recent article The problem with search engine optimization. He sums up his feelings by saying:
So, if I go a little overboard (as I did, intentionally, in my SEO post below) please cut me a little slack.
So, by way of explanation:
- I knew (had a strong suspicion, at least) that this was not meant to be literal and absolute, but it made for good blogging - and I wanted to add a thought or two. (also, I’ll admit that this was a nice piece of trackback SEO for my fledgling blog. Oh, the sweet irony.)
- I’ve always had a bit of a problem with inaccuracy. My father is a much better story-teller than I. He has a way of bending, polishing, ignoring the facts that makes for a great yarn. No one is fooled, nor does he mean them to be. I’ve never been able to do this, but I think that it is a valid and worthy talent. My compulsion to be accurate often stands between me and making a point concisely. I’ll work on this. In the meantime try to avoid Big Fish comparisons, thanks.
So, Seth, my apologies. I did take your point and I agree completely that SEO is no magic bullet.
/me cuts Seth some slack.
I wasn’t complaining. Your comments were fine, and I wasn’t offended!
But thanks for reading.
