Lowered Expectations: How Bush will win in November
Published July 7th, 2004 in Election 2004(anyone else humming the tune from the Mad TV sketch?)
I saw Fahrenheit 9/11 on Monday with my parents. I enjoyed the movie, and (of course) agreed with most of the points that were made. I’ve given myself a couple days to mull it over and see what stuck with me. Besides the violence and sadness of war, what remains mostly is that President Bush came off looking pretty good.
How could he possibly look good in a movie made to embarrass him (by Michael Moore, no less) ? Those of you who read headlines may have guessed. I don’t expect much of Mr. Bush. I don’t expect him to understand a situation or to react appropriately to it. I don’t even expect him to tell the truth. In Fahrenheit 9/11, I liked President Bush more than I expected to because he was jovial.
I think that we have lowered our expectations as a country. It is sad, and it’s scary.
Kerry supporters would do well to remember that all of the Bush bashing may hurt the President’s image, but it may also lower an already low bar, and come November he doesn’t have to outdo Senator Kerry. He only has to clear the bar.
