Saturday on the Hiwassee
Published July 18th, 2004 in Whitewater KayakingOn Saturday I went with a group of friends, six of us total, to paddle the Hiwassee. I was in a Kingpin 6.3, the boat I’ve been paddling recently.
It was a little overcast, but the water at the Hiwassee was not very cold (it usually isn’t). I spent the day working on my surfing. Last weekend I learned some things that I was doing wrong by watching better paddlers and through the consequences of some of my mistakes. Yesterday in the forgiving waters of the Hiwassee, I worked to correct those mistakes. I had a very good day and learned a lot. That’s not the sort of thing that someone who has been paddling as long as I have is supposed to say about a river like the Hiwassee. I’ve said it, though, and I’m not ashamed.
