Google as spellchecker

Am I the only one that uses Google like this?

If in doubt, I type the word in question into my search toolbar. When the results are returned, there are several indicators I use to determine if the word is spelled correctly. I just searched for “indefatiguable” [google.com]:

  • The blue bar titled Web contains a link if the word is known to dictionary.com. If the word is a link, I know I got a real word at least. This is usually good enough for me. In the case of my search, “indefatiguable” was not a link.
  • There may be red text at the top of the results suggesting alternate spellings: “Did you mean: …”. This is to be taken with a grain of sand. Google correctly assumed I was trying to spell “indefatigable”. I clicked “Did you mean: indefatigable” [google.com], and got the results I was looking for.
  • Finally, the number of results can provide some indication of the validity of the word you entered. If you have heard the word, it is likely going to be present on thousands of sites. My initial search “indefatiguable” returned 691 results. The corrected search for “indefatigable” returned 121,000.

This method can also be used to figure out which version of a phrase is correct. Just check which version of the phrase returns the most results. “Taken with a grain of sand” [google.com] or “taken with a grain of salt” [google.com], for instance 8-).

Yeah, sometimes I use Google that way. Especially since I have a Google search box
built into most browsers I use. BTW, your site renders pretty well using iCab
2.9.8 (68k). Better than mine, at least.

I’m glad to hear it. Any chance I could get some screenshots from you? I’d be curious.
