Big Frog Mountain Backpacking Trip in Data
Published February 27th, 2006 in Hiking and BackpackingI had a great weekend backpacking in Big Frog Wilderness this weekend with Jon Sharp and Phillip and Bruce from Nashville. Rather than write a trip report, I’m just going to present the data I’ve gathered on the trip. There are some pictures from our trip and below is a map (click on the labels in the legend to hide/display tracks) and altitude profile of our hikes.

Jon, do you know if there is a reliabel water source near the top of Big Frog Mtn? I am planning an in and out hike this week starting at Dally Gap in the Cahutta, and would like to catch the winter views, but I do need water. We’re in quita a drought here in GA, but there is a little rain here in Atlanta tonight.

Skip,
David here. This is my site, not Jon’s. Thanks for stopping in. I’ll do my best to answer your question.
There is a small spring at the top of Big Frog (near the trail intersection that is just south of the “Friday night campsite” marker on the map above). In my experience there has always been water there, but it is sometimes just a trickle. I have not been up the mountain since this drought began, and am not confident you will find water. If I were taking the trip, I would carry minimum drinking/cooking water, and hope to find some more at the top. I hope you have a great trip.
Hey Dave,
I’m now planning a hike from Dally Gap to the Ocoee River, I think to the #3 powerhouse. Any advice on the trip? As I look for info, it appears they have changed the names of some of the trails. I’ll be going out in late March.
