White House Redux : Andy Rutledge
April 27th, 2006For-fun redesign of whitehouse.gov. Nice design, nice write up, good idea.
Watch these movies, then we can talk (kottke.org)
April 27th, 2006A list of 102 movies you must see to be film literate. Compiled by Jim Emerson. I've got some work to do.
Some videos I’ve been waiting to go live on google video finally have. Here they are, in no particular order:
Montie skiing down a hill while we were cross-country skiing in NC:
Me falling off while snow tubing (this one cracks me up):
Ryan tubing:
Random redneck on the ropeswing at Suck Creek. Sadly, I didn’t get video of anyone in our group:
Use of liquid nitrogen to remove duct tape from a homicide victim.
April 24th, 2006This shows up on the first page of Google results for "remove duct tape adhesive". I didn't realize this was a problem. Creepy.
Search Engine User Behavior White Paper (.pdf)
April 19th, 2006Nothing groundbreaking here, but the specific numbers and trends are interesting.
Deep Water Soloing, Railey, Thailand - Flickr photoset
April 18th, 2006Free solo climbing over water in Thailand. Me like.
Baseball Statistics [alexreisner.com]
April 12th, 2006I'm not a baseball person, but this site is both interesting and beautiful: definitely worth checking out if you enjoy design, info graphics, or baseball.
NYT: This Boring Headline Is Written for Google
April 10th, 2006I do this, and while it sometimes makes me sad, it's about more than search engines, it's about usability too. Also to its credit, this article taught me a new word: quotidian.

I’ve been climbing twice in the last week or so, and am enjoying the spring weather (finally) a great deal. The first trip out, my form was good until halfway through my second climb, when my arms gave out. Weak! Had fun anway. We went to Leda (aka Leeda, aka Leida, aka Lleda, etc…) in Soddy Daisy, TN, which is where I do most of my climbing. We took a helmet cam video of Montie leading TJ’s Demise 5.9:
The second trip out—also to Leda—was just Montie and I, and my arms fared better. I led Walk By Me 5.7 and Montie followed for a warm-up. Then Montie led Old Foot 5.9, which gets scary around the 3rd bolt, but he did brilliantly. We each climbed that a couple times and were feeling tired, so we hit Speedway Boogie 5.7 twice each to finish the day. I took a few pictures.
Flickr: Photos tagged with stereogram
April 7th, 20061) Open the largest version of the image that will fit on your screen. 2) Sit back about 3 feet from your monitor. 3) Cross eyes slightly* and wait for images to combine. 4) Enjoy the 3D goodness. * - Some images are parallel, not cross-eyed, good luck
Opposition Effect on Flickr
April 6th, 2006I am intrigued by kite aerial photography, so when I found a KAPer on flickr, I was excited. In this particular photo, you can see what is called the opposition effect. Read about it in the 2nd comment. New to me; very interesting.
Who and whom
April 6th, 2006Usage of 'who' and 'whom' broken down case by case. Don't miss the rules at the bottom of the page. I think I've finally got this.
A couple days ago, I received two items that I purchased on eBay that will enable me to create some new types of content for this website. I’m excited about the possibilities.
First, I got a helmet cam. I hope to use it for mountain biking, and when the season comes around again, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding. Already, we recorded a first person lead climb. As soon as it is verified by Google Video, I’ll post it.
I also got a waterproof case (model WP-DC200s) for my Canon Powershot A40. I plan on using it to take photos and videos of whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking, spear fishing, and other watersports.
Watch this space.
Sonos Digital Music System
April 2nd, 2006As many have said, Sonos could do for home audio what the iPod did for portable music. I have dreamt of a system just like this, and while I knew the technology existed, I thought the realization was far away. I lust for one. Check it out.
SourceForge.net: Synergy
March 29th, 2006Share a mouse and keyboard between multiple computers without any special hardware. Functions just like multiple monitors. Amazing! Supports "All 32-bit MS Windows (95/98/NT/2000/XP), All POSIX (Linux/BSD/UNIX-like OSes), Linux". That includes OSX.
